okay, i kid you not — this may be one of the coolest products i’ve been asked to review in some time. i am completely smitten with my new Google Home. Google Home is a voice-activated speaker powered by the Google Assistant — you ask it questions and tell it to do things. honestly, i didn’t know what to expect because i’m a bit of a Luddite when it comes to technology (even though i practically live online, technology stumps me a lot!). but i was asked to check out the new Google Home, and this little piece of tech is my new BFF. you literally plug in the device, download the app on your phone or tablet, give it a bit of information on your wifi situation etcetera and then it basically makes your life a whole bunch easier. i’ve been redecorating around here and sprucing things up for spring, so i found a nice little spot for Google Home right among my beloved treasures and she fits right in. and, you can easily move it around — simply unplug and plug it in elsewhere.
i used to struggle a bit with my wireless speaker and now i just say, “hey google, can you play me some mellow music?” and she (i think she’s a she) says “sure, I’ll play your spotify mix called mellow music”. it’s as simple as that. you can ask her to turn the volume up or down, skip a song, or move on to another playlist. or play your favorite podcasts or news stations, like the lastest from NPR.
i asked Google Home to set an alarm for me for 7:30am and she woke me up nicely. i asked her (i think i need to give her a name) what my day looked like and she reads off my calendar appointments and the weather. i’m telling you it’s pretty magical how she syncs up with my calendar and knows more than i do about the cosmos and what the day will look like and whether i need short sleeves or a light jacket.
i also put her to the test in the kitchen and asked my Google Home what to make with fresh basil and she read off an encyclopedia of options including how to make fresh pesto. i asked her where the closest neighborhood florist was and she named three great spots close by. you can ask her what museums are open, or ask her for an interesting tidbit of information and she’ll rattle off some amazing topics and trivia. this girl has got it all — looks and brains. i’m pretty much in love with my Google Home — and maybe best of all — when she talks back, she talks back nicely.
